In Business, A Little Professional Courtesy Goes A Long Way

At www.trainingregistry.com, it’s our goal to provide the management training resources your business will need to succeed. From consulting services and training courses and to training facilities, keynote speakers, training companies, products, and more, you’ll find most all of the training materials you’ll need; including one that is becoming a lost art in today’s business world. That tool is the everyday practice of common professional courtesy.

To be certain there is a lot of pressure in today’s business world, particularly in the tough economy we are all dealing with. Pressure may be a cause of a lack of courtesy, but it is certainly no excuse for it. In fact in the tough market we’re facing peofessional courtesy is more important than ever. There are many examples of a lack of courtesy in the workplace, some of which we’ve all been guilty of at one time or another. One such example is the propensity to not return calls or emails.

The truly galling part is that often times the person who is not responding is the one who made initial contact asking for specific information. Then after the person they contacted took from their own valuable time to gather that information and respond, they don’t even receive an acknowledgement. Now there are many reasons for not responding. Perhaps your needs have changed, or someone asked you for some information that you’ve yet to find. Even if you don’t wish to speak with them there are ways to acknowledge them. Use auto responders in your email, or return their call and leave a message at an hour when you know they won’t be there. By doing so you’ve extended them the courtesy of acknowledging their call or email.

It all comes down to being respectful of people’s time and valuing it as much as you do your own. Returning phone calls and emails, particularly if you reached out to someone and asked them for something, is an acknowledgment that their time is as important as yours, and that you appreciate their efforts. Other things, like focusing on proper introductions, handshakes and greetings, convey respect for peers, clients, and business associates, and go a long way in cultivating other people’s image of you in the workplace.

In a business world full of stress and pressure, a little professional courtesy can be a key to your success. And the good news is that the ability to be courteous is in all of us. We may have set it aside for a while, but we can reinstate it and practice it just as easily!
