    How much do you really hear that your audit subjects are saying? People often confuse the physical act of hearing with the emotional art of listening. The modern educational system emphasizes speaking and writing, but does not teach the important skill of active listening. How well you listen has a major impact on your effectiveness as an auditor, and on the quality of your relationships with members of your team. Active listening also helps you: 1) identify and solve problems, 2) increase your knowledge and 3) avoid misunderstandings Various studies stress the importance of listening as an auditor skill. A typical study points out that professionals spend 70 to 80 percent of working hours in some form of communication. Of that time, professionals spend about 9% writing, 16% reading, 30% speaking, and 45% listening.
